Perched upon a limestone ridge surrounded by redheart woodlands sits Redheart Ridge Avocado orchard, owned and run by married couple Jenifer French and Sarah Horgan.
They grow several varieties of avocado beginning with green-skins in June (Santana, Fuerte, Bacon) then the Hass varieties are available from August – October (Llanos, Lamb, Hass). They also have small numbers of Reed, Wurtz and Sharwil which are available around September – October.
Their trees are spray-free and well-fertilised by wild kangaroos!
Every avocado is hand-picked and handled with care so you should never see any internal bruising or discolouration.
Info on Santana avos have a bright green, glossy thin skin and light, creamy flesh. They are relatively low in oil compared to Hass and as such, are excellent in salads or baking. To freeze for later use in smoothies or dressings, simply dice flesh into cubes and freeze in a single layer on baking paper. When frozen, transfer to zip-loc bags. To defrost, place cubes in a bowl of water for 5-10 minutes.
